A European Parliament delegation has cancelled a trip to Iran, where the MEPs had planned to meet Sakharov Prize winners Nasrin Soutoudeh and Jafar Panahi. Iranian officials refused them access to the Prize winners.

Several Shiite pilgrims near Baghdad have been killed during an attack during one of Islam's most important holidays. Meanwhile, shootings in northern Iraq have cast a shadow over Eid al-Adha celebrations.

Georg-Büchner-Preis awarded to Felicitas Hoppe
Felicitas Hoppe has won the 2012 Georg-Büchner-Preis, one of Germany's top literary awards. The 51-year-old author collected the honor on Saturday in the city of Darmstadt.
