Cheat Sheet - Was Princess Diana Murdered?

Today: It's Time to Hold Our Nose and Back Egypt's Military , Idaho Wildfire Causes More Evacuations , China Sets Trial Date for Bo Xilai
Cheat Sheet: Morning

August 18, 2013
ROYAL TWIST

Sixteen years after a fatal car crash in a Parisian tunnel, Scotland Yard is investigating claims that Princess Diana was assassinated by the British military. The Daily Beast's Nico Hines reports.

IT'S TIME

If Islamists regain control in Egypt, all hope for democracy is lost. So as unsavory as it may feel, working with the moderate-aligned military is our only hope, writes The Daily Beast's Leslie H. Gelb.

BLAZE

More people were evacuated from their homes in Idaho on Saturday night after a wildfire pushed north, bringing the total number of evacuated homes up to 2,300. Seven hundred firefighters have been deployed to the region, which includes the wealthy ski resort town of Ketchum, where Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis and more celebrities own homes. The Beaver Creek fire, which started when lightning struck the region on Aug. 7th, is only six percent contained. The fire remained fairly tame until Friday night, when it grew to 144 acres, fed by dry timber and underbush. "The fire is consuming everything," fire spokeswoman Madonna Lengerich said.

DISGRACED

This could be the trial of the century in China. Communist Party officials announced on Sunday that ex-party boss Bo Xilai's trial will begin on Thursday, amid a high-profile crackdown on corruption. Xilai, the former party chief of the city of Chongqing and once called one of the 25 most powerful men in China, was expelled from the party last year after a scandal involving the murder of a British businessman, Neil Haywood. Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, has been charged Haywood's murder. The trial will be held in the eastern city of Jinan, far from his old power base in Chongqing. Meanwhile, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported on Sunday that former top Communist Party official Liu Tienan has been placed under investigation for suspected bribe-taking.

CORRECTION NEEDED

Former President Bill Clinton said on Friday that there were important errors in The New York Times piece on the Clinton Foundation's finances—and the errors caused the right-wing media to (predictably) go into overdrive in their criticism of Hillary Clinton. On August 13th, Nicholas Confessore and Amy Chozick of the Times wrote that there is "unease" over finance and management issues at the recently renamed nonprofit, now called the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation. The Times report claimed that the Foundation had a $40 million deficit in 2007 and 2008, and an $8 million deficit in 2012, citing tax returns. Bill Clinton said in a letter that those numbers were inaccurate since they relied on unaudited numbers from the 2012 annual report, and audited financials will reveal a surplus. Additionally, Clinton said the Times failed to provide crucial context and facts.

Area 51 Is Real!

The government's declassification of documents relating to the fabled secret military base isn't all good news; it kind of takes away from the fun of imagining the mysteries hidden in Area 51. In honor of the aliens that probably don't actually reside there, here's a look at Hollywood's depictions of Area 51.
