Cheat Sheet - Pope Francis’s Lessons for the GOP

Today: Fringe Factor: Most Young Immigrants Are Drug Mules , Report: Weiner's Campaign Manager Quits , Morsi Backers Refuse to Quit

The new pope hasn't been afraid to challenge the entrenched interests that have sullied his church's perception. His style of reaching out is just what might save the Republican Party, writes The Daily Beast's John Avlon.

Fringe Factor

Most DREAMers arrived with marijuana on their backs, North Carolinians will soon be able to bring guns to the bar, and an Alabama meeting kicks off with a prayer against gay marriage. The Daily Beast's Caitlin Dickson finds this week's highlights from the political fringe.

BAD SIGN

This can't be a good sign. Anthony Weiner's campaign manager, Danny Kedem ,is quitting, sources told The New York Times on Sunday. Kedem, 31, reportedly does not wish to oversee the campaign after last week's revelations that Weiner continued sexting long after he had resigned from office two years ago. Kedem reportedly informed Weiner of his decision within the past 24 hours, although neither Kedem nor Weiner's campaign wished to comment.

DEFIANCE

Supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi refused to leave their sit-in demonstration on Sunday, even though dozens were killed in clashes on Saturday—and an interior minister warned that the protesters will be dispersed "soon." The health ministry has estimated that 78 people were killed, although doctors at the scene put the number closer to 100. The government has denied opening fire on Saturday, saying only tear gas was used. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim said the protesters should "come to their senses" and leave, since a lawsuit has been filed by residents near the mosque for their removal. Saturday's clashes appear to have been started after the pro-Morsi supporters attempted to extend their protest site's barricades, causing a response from security forces.

TRAGEDY

At least three people were killed and another is in critical condition after a bus carrying mostly children and teenagers from a local church camp overturned on Saturday near Indianapolis. The bus, reportedly traveling "at a high speed," careened off an exit ramp on I-465 and landed on its side. "It kind of pivoted on the nose of the bus and did a little bit of a twist," said witness Carol Albright. "How it didn't hit another car, I don't know." Most of the injured were teenagers, but a toddler was also taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition. Indianapolis public safety director Troy Riggs said there would be an "exhaustive investigation" into what happened.
