Cheat Sheet - Report: Virginia Tech Gunman Dead

Today: 20 NATO Tankers Torched in Pakistan , Obama Defends Plan B Decision , Bizarre DSK Hotel Video Released
The Daily Beast Cheat Sheet: Afternoon

December 08, 2011
NOT AGAIN

Police say that the threat at Virginia Tech has passed. The suspected shooter is believed to be dead, but in a press conference police refused to confirm the reports. SWAT teams were called in and the campus locked down after an officer was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop in the campus parking lot earlier today. An anonymous law enforcement official reportedly said that the shooter was not the driver of the car. Virginia Tech's police chief and president are in D.C. today to appeal a fine levied against the school after the 2007 massacre, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

ATTACK

Pakistani officials said that 20 NATO tankers were set ablaze on Thursday after a rocket attack on a temporary NATO trucking terminal in Quetta. The tankers were carrying fuel for U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan. Senior police official Malik Arshad said the number of casualties is not yet known because "the blaze is so huge." No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, but the Taliban has carried out similar attacks in the past. Thursday's attack came just a few weeks after NATO troops killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in a deadly strike. That caused Pakistan to close its border crossing to NATO troops, and as result, tankers have been using temporary terminals that are poorly guarded.

BIRTH CONTROL

President Obama is standing by the controversial decision by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to stop Plan B morning-after pills from becoming available to women under 17 without a prescription. "As the father of two daughters, it makes sense to apply some common sense," said Obama, though he said he didn't get involved in the decision. He said Sebelius "could not be confident a 10-year-old or an 11-year-old going to a pharmacy would [not] be able to … buy a medication that could have an adverse effect." Yesterday Sebelius overruled Food and Drug Administration regulators who said the pill should be available to all women without a prescription.

MYSTERY

What really happened to former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn at the Softel in New York on May 14? Hotel surveillance video, broadcast by French news channel BFMT on Thursday, is adding to the speculation. The CCTV footage shows DSK calmly leaving the hotel. Nafissatou Diallo, the hotel maid who accused DSK of rape, then appears to reenact how DSK allegedly held her to the ground to force her to perform oral sex. After she apparently told members of the staff, two security guards then do what looks like a victory dance. The footage—including la danse de joie—corroborates much of the details of a New York Review of Books investigative article about the possibility that DSK might have been framed, though the NYRB had said the dance lasted three minutes and later corrected it to 13 seconds.

RELEASED

Jerry Sandusky is out again after posting bail. The former Penn State assistant football coach was arrested yesterday on 12 new charges of child sex abuse after the grand-jury report released details of the testimony of two new alleged victims, including one who says he screamed for help in Sandusky's basement when the coach tried to rape him, but Sandusky's wife didn't come to his rescue. Sandusky posted bail using $200,000 in real-estate holdings and a $50,000 certified check from his wife. As a condition of his release, he will be confined to his home using an electronic monitoring device.
