RELIGION

A pastor whose family was murdered in New Mexico belonged to a large association of evangelical churches that, critics allege, stands behind misbehaving pastors and looks away when they are accused of sexual abuse and other misdeeds. David Sessions reports.

INFERNO

A fire at a nightclub in southern Brazil killed more than 200 people on Sunday. An official said another 200 may be injured after the fire at Kiss nightclub in city of Santa Maria, and up to 500 people may have been inside the club when the fire broke out. Many of the victims died from asphyxiation or were trampled to death. The fire started after the band’s pyrotechnics show ignited the ceiling and the blaze rapidly spread.

SECOND TERM

From North Korean aggression to an immigration-reform Willie Horton, there's plenty that could emerge out of "nowhere" to haunt the White House. David Freedlander asks experts what could be lurking ahead.

NOT THAT SCARY

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has vowed “high-profile” and “substantial” retaliation against the United States-led United Nations sanctions on the country. North Korea called the move an “all-out action” against the U.S. The North Korean Central News Agency said, “At the consultative meeting, Kim Jong-un expressed the firm resolution to take substantial and high-profile important state measures in view of the prevailing situation. He advanced specific tasks to the officials concerned.” The country did not specify what those measures might be, but did refer to earlier statements in which the country declared its goal to build an ability to “target” the U.S.

CHAMPION

Novak Djokovic beat Andy Murray and won the Australian Open final on Sunday. No. 1 Djokovic won 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-2, beating No. 3 Murray in four sets. It’s Djokovic’s third-consecutive title in Melbourne and his fourth since 2008. The only other men with four titles are Andre Agassi and Roger Federer. Djokovic is also the first man to win three consecutive titles in the Open era. Murray was in control of the match until 2-2 in the second tiebreak when play was momentarily paused when a feather floated on court. It was all downhill from there.
