Romney's choice of running mate accelerates the move away from the 2012 election as a straight-line referendum on the economy. Now it is unmistakably and irretrievably a decision about the future, says Robert Shrum.

EGYPT

After firing Egypt's top general Sunday and canceling constitutional amendments that gave sweeping powers to the armed forces, President Mohamed Morsi was cheered by crowds in Tahrir Square on Sunday night. Morsi said in an address that his decision to clean house among the nation's top brass was not motivated by personal animosities and added, "My aim was the benefit of this nation and its people." Some have greeted the decision with skepticism, however, seeing it as the just the most recent blow landed in a power struggle between the country's military and civilian leaders that began soon after the ouster of dictator Hosni Mubarak.

DENIED

It happens every election: mysterious fliers, robocalls, malfunctioning machines that deny blacks the right to vote. Now the Republican Party has explicitly embraced the strategy.

JOB SEARCH

Search-engine giant Google announced that it will be cutting Motorola Mobility's staff by about 20 percent, knocking off close to 4,000 jobs at the mobile-devices company, which it picked up in May for $12.5 billion. The majority of jobs lost will be overseas, the company said, and will involve the closing of about one third of Motorola's facilities. Google said Monday that investors "should expect to see significant revenue variability for Motorola for several quarters"—no shock to those who have followed Motorola as it has failed to reach profitability in 14 recent quarters. In an SEC filing, the company said that it will "shift its emphasis from feature phones to more innovative and profitable devices."

BYE 'TIL 2016

That's all, folks: the London 2012 Olympic Games have officially ended with a closing ceremony that held nothing back. In an ode to British pop, there were performances from the reunited Spice Girls, as well as boyband One Direction, the Kaiser Chiefs, Ray Davies, George Michael, and Elbow, among others. Athletes and onlookers commemorated the event's finish for more than an hour of wild celebrations. As mimes acted out Beatles songs, Batman and Robin burst from an exploding car and Winston Churchill read Shakespeare, the Olympic athletes streamed onto the field in a mass of flags and colors, probably relieved to be done with their competitions. The ceremony will be broadcast Sunday night on NBC.

Paul Ryan: GOP's Friend or Foe?

It's no surprise Romney's Ryan pick brought conservatives to their feet—but why are liberals still cheering? In their first television interview after Saturday's big announcement, Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney defend Ryan's infamous budgetary plan from Dems 'licking their chops.'
