SYRIA

A Syrian warplane crashed over the eastern province of Deir el-Zour on Monday. Activists released a video that reportedly shows the Soviet-made MiG warplane catching fire before crashing down in flames. The pilot ejected before it crashed. The rebels claim they shot the plane down with ground fire. However, state-run media claims the plane was on a training mission and crashed due to technical error. SANA news agency says that a search has been launched to find the pilot.

VEEP

The new GOP vice-presidential candidate is just as zealous about zapping body fat as he is about slicing government spending. The Daily Beast's Eliza Shapiro talks to fitness experts about P90X, the extreme workout regimen that Ryan spread to his House colleagues as successfully as he sold his controversial budget.

BIG PURCHASE

Internet behemoth Google is adding to its empire. The company is purchasing Frommer’s in an effort to expand its travel-related services. Google is already in the restaurant-review business thanks to its acquisition of Zagat Survey in September 2011. Adding Frommer’s will give Google a stake in the hotel- and destination-review business as well. The terms of the deal, which haven’t yet been finalized, have not been disclosed. It’s unclear whether Google will continue printing Frommer’s guidebooks.

Farm Country

Paul Ryan will be the target of President Obama’s attacks as he hits his first of three campaign stops in Iowa this week. While in Council Bluffs, Monday, Obama will discuss the pending Farm Bill intended to benefit Iowa and other agricultural centers. “He’s one of those leaders of Congress standing in the way,” he plans to say of Mitt Romney’s running mate. “So if you happen to see Congressman Ryan, tell him how important this farm bill is to Iowa and our rural communities. It’s time to put our politics aside and pass it right away.” Ryan will also be campaigning in the Hawkeye state this week.
