FIRST PERSON

Naomi Wolf, the feminist activist and author of The Beauty Myth, found herself in the middle of an Occupy Wall Street protest last night and ended up getting arrested—in her ball gown. Wolf was on her way to a Huffington Post event in New York when she encountered a crowd of 200 protesters. Police said the event coordinators had a permit that banned people from demonstrating on the sidewalk, but when Wolf said no such permit existed and tried to lead a march back to the event side of the street, she was cuffed and taken to jail. Wolf describes the event in The Guardian: "First they come for the 'other' – the 'terrorist,' the brown person, the Muslim, the outsider; then they come for you – while you are standing on a sidewalk in evening dress, obeying the law."

SURPRISE

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton unexpectedly landed in Afghanistan on Wednesday, a day after making a surprise visit to Libya. Clinton will be meeting with President Hamid Karzai and top leaders tomorrow in an effort to encourage peace talks with the Taliban. Previous efforts to lure insurgent Taliban fighters away from their cause have proved futile, especially after leading peace negotiator Burhanuddin Rabbani was killed, reportedly by the Pakistan-based Haqqani network. Clinton also hopes to solidify an agreement on the relationship between Afghanistan and the U.S. after most American troops are removed by 2015.

ANIMALS

Ohio authorities have captured or killed all but a monkey and a wolf among the animals released by the owner of a private zoo. Ohio law-enforcement officials have cordoned off seven square miles of Interstate 70 as they search for the animals. They've hunted down as many as 51 animals—including leopards, bears, and tigers—since zoo owner Terry Thompson freed them last night before killing himself. Thompson was warned 30 times in the last year to get his animals under control, and he was arrested in 2005 for animal abuse.

WALL STREET

It probably isn't enough to appease the protesters, but Citigroup will pay $285 million to settle charges brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission that it defrauded investors. The SEC accused Citigroup of selling $1 billion in assets backed by toxic housing-related debt, and then betting that the financial instruments would fail. When the debt obligations defaulted less than nine months after it closed, investors were left with losses while Citigroup made $160 million in fees and profits. Citigroup did not have to admit wrongdoing as part of the settlement.

DEBT MONSTER

Greek police and protesters clashed Wednesday at an anti-austerity demonstration outside the Parliament. At least 14 police officers were reportedly hospitalized Wednesday afternoon as a group of hooded demonstrators threw stones, chunks of marble, and gasoline bombs; police retaliated by releasing tear gas on the crowd.  An estimated 100,000 people marched through Athens during the first day of the general strike protesting the government's vote on harsh new austerity measures meant to cut back on the nation's debt problem.  Aside from the protests, Athens was quiet Wednesday as government departments, businesses, and public services were all shut down and posters outside stores read "We are shutting down for the day so that we don't shut down forever."
