American jets have been pounding Syria for months, but ISIS has only gained key terrain, report Tim Mak and Nancy A. Youssef.

New Dawn

Tommy Caldwell and his climbing partner Kevin Jorgeson summited El Capitan's foreboding Dawn Wall in Yosemite Park on Wednesday—an accomplishment 3,000 feet and 55 years in the making, reports James Joiner.

NOT CHARLIE

Pope Francis said Thursday that free speech doesn't cover insulting religion, barely a week after the Charlie Hebdo massacre. "One cannot provoke, one cannot insult other people's faith, one cannot make fun of faith," the pope said in Italian. "Every religion has its dignity… and I cannot make fun of it," he continued. "In freedom of expression, there are limits, like in regard to my mom. ... If he says a swear word against my mother, he's going to get a punch in the nose."

On the trail

American jihadi Anwar al-Awlaki was clearly at the heart of the Paris attacks. To prevent future tragedies, intelligence agents must work out how his network continues to thrive after his death, report Tim Mak and Nancy A. Youssef.

STUNG

An Ohio man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly planning to bomb the U.S. Capitol after authorities saw him tweet about "jihad." Christopher Lee Cornell, aka Raheel Mahrus Ubaydah, was allegedly planning to set off a series of bombs around the U.S. Capitol in an ISIS-inspired attack. The FBI arrested Cornell for allegedly attempting to kill a U.S. government official but initially started tracking him after noticing his tweets advocating for violent "jihad," according to government documents.
