ALBANY SWAMP

The Speaker of the New York State Assembly, Sheldon Silver, was arrested by the FBI on corruption charges Thursday. Prosecutors allege that Silver, a Democrat who's served as speaker for more than two decades, was paid more than $4 million from a small New York law firm that focuses on real-estate tax reductions for residential and commercial properties. Silver failed to list the payments from the firm, Goldberg & Iryami, on his annual financial-disclosure filings with the state. He faces five counts including mail fraud, wire fraud, and extortion. According to the complaint, he ran a scheme "to induce real-estate developers with business before the state" and was pulling payments for referrals he gave the firm.

Yemen's president and his cabinet resigned Thursday following Houthi rebels' capture of his palace this week. President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi had agreed to share power with the rebels earlier in the day, but apparently that's moot. Yemen has been a key ally in the U.S. war against al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, allowing drone strikes there for years.

BAD BALLS

The coach of the New England Patriots says he did not know there was an issue with the air pressure in the footballs his team used in Sunday's AFC Championship game until Monday. Bill Belichick told a press conference he only found out the league was investigating the Patriots on Monday and does not know how the balls became underinflated in a scandal now known as Deflategate. "To me, the footballs are approved by the league and game officials pregame, and we play with what's out there. And that's the only way I have ever thought about that," he said. Tom Brady will speak at 4 p.m. ET.
