Read This, Skip That ....

July 29, 2014
SWIRL, SIP, SPIT
Think your "craft" whiskey was locally distilled? Think again. Eric Felten reveals the artisan whiskey industry's biggest secret: Many of the so-called small-batch distillers are actually buying their product from one large factory in Indiana.
CUTTING POWER
Gaza is being torn down. The power station, the port, government buildings, and private homes have all been hit by Israel. Jesse Rosenfeld reports from Gaza City that this is all part of Operation Protective Edge, meant to demilitarize the strip, but looks more like deindustrialization with all its terrible effects.
SPREADING
Over the past few nights across Rome, more than 70 disturbing hate messages were scrawled with black and red paint throughout the so-called Jewish Ghetto around the city's main synagogue. Barbie Latza Nadeau writes that anti-Jewish graffiti in Rome has little to do with Israel and Gaza, though.
MANNED UP
The European Union agreed Tuesday to harsh new sanctions against Russia to punish the country for its involvement in Ukraine. After months of hesitating, EU ambassadors united and agreed to send a potentially crippling economic message to Moscow, with sanctions hitting oil, gas, and military sectors. Much of Europe is reliant on Russia for its energy supply and was loath to enforce severe sanctions, but the downing of MH17 reportedly changed attitudes. "The plane changed everything," said Sophia Pugsley of the European Council on Foreign Relations.
SLY GUY
Team Obama is constantly needled by the Tea Party, especially its certain junior senator from Texas. Eli Lake interviews Ted Cruz and finds a master troll provocateur, but also a man who reveals a new kind of conservative foreign policy: American exceptionalism without the nation building.
