Cheat Sheet - ISIS Is Set to Destroy Biblical History

Read This, Skip That ....

RELIGIOUS WAR

Thousands have died as a result of ISIS' bloody determination to establish an Islamic caliphate, and ancient artifacts may be the next victims. Christopher Dickey spoke with Iraqi antiquities officials who are calling on the Obama administration to help preserve the precious remnants of biblical history in Nineveh and other sites around Mosul. Without Western intervention, irreplaceable history will be annihilated or sold into the shadows.

FIGHTING WORDS

The U.S. State Department has tens of thousands of photographs proving that the Syrian government is operating a "machinery of cruel death" not seen since Hitler, according to one official. Josh Rogin reports that multiple experts confirm that there is clear evidence that Assad is committing systematic killings and torture that could fit the definition of genocide. Why hasn't the U.S. said so publicly?

NO TOLERANCE

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to the father of the murdered Palestinian teen that his attackers will be prosecuted. On Sunday, Israel police arrested six suspects in the killing of 16-year-old Mohammed Abu Khdeir, who was burned to death last week. His murder is suspected of being a revenge attack for the three Israeli teens who were abducted and murdered. "I wish to express my shock and the shock of Israel's citizens over the despicable murder of your son," Netanyahu said to Hussein Abu Khudair, according to a statement. "The murderers will be brought to trial and prosecuted to the full extent of the law." The Palestinian teen's death sparked a cycle of violence over the weekend. Thousands of Palestinians gathered in East Jerusalem to call for a third intifada. Riots and open fire broke out, and seven members of Hamas were killed. Hamas, in turn, vowed "the Zionist enemy will pay the price."

AIRPLANE MODE

First they came for our greater-than-three-ounces fluids, and now they're coming for our cellphones. The Transportation Security Administration announced Sunday that passengers traveling from overseas to the U.S. should expect to have their cellphones and other electronics checked. TSA officials will want to see that the devices can be turned on, and if they can't be powered up, they won't make it past security. TSA said in a statement, "Officers may ask that owners power up some devices, including cellphones. Powerless devices will not be permitted onboard the aircraft." The added regulation comes just days after the Department of Homeland Security announced it would increase security measures at certain overseas airports, reportedly in response to fears that terrorists in Syria were developing more sophisticated ways to sneak bombs onto flights. TSA also announced Sunday that passengers "may undergo additional screening."

CHI-RAQ

The Fourth of July weekend was a bloody one in Chicago. As of 11:45 p.m. Sunday, 53 people had been wounded and nine were killed by gun violence over the holiday weekend. An additional two were shot dead by police, including a 16-year-old boy Saturday night. On Sunday afternoon alone, 11 people were shot within four hours. All of the fatalities were black or Hispanic men under the age of 35. Chicago actually has its lowest homicide rate since 1963, but gun violence is still clearly a major problem in the city. Patricia Donald, a recent high-school graduate and resident of the Englewood section of Chicago, said, "I gotta get out of here. It's looking like everybody is gonna be dead."
