COUP
BANGKOK, Thailand — There's no doubt now: The military has staged a coup d'etat in Thailand. Army Gen. Prayuth Chan-Ocha just went on television to announce that the army has taken over, two days after he imposed martial law while insisting it was not a coup and that the caretaker government remained in charge. A number of government and opposition leaders were arrested Thursday at a meeting Prayuth set up to discuss how to move forward. Among those detained was Democrat Party leader and former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. Caretaker Prime Minister Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan of the Pheu Thai Party, who took over after the Constitutional Court removed Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra two weeks ago, was not in attendance. A big question is whether Yingluck, who is now in the northern city of Chiang Mai, will be arrested. — Lennox Samuels
HORRIBLE

After being kidnapped at the age of 15 and being held against her will for 10 years, a California woman was found Wednesday. The Santa Ana Police Department said it has booked her captor, Isidor Garcia, who is being held on suspicion of kidnapping for rape, lewd acts with a minor, and false imprisonment. Police say Garcia had been the live-in boyfriend of the victim's mother, who suspected he was having a romantic relationship with her teenage daughter. The victim now says Garcia was sexually abusing her during that time. Garcia disappeared with the victim after a domestic-violence incident with her mother. He allegedly drugged and kidnapped the victim and locked her in the garage of a house in Compton. Garcia moved her to several different locations, while allegedly continuing his sexual and physical abuse. According to investigators, Garcia intimidated the victim with threats of deportation and forced her to marry him in 2007 and have their child in 2012.

LET IT GO
More than a decade has passed since Hillary Clinton coined the phrase "the vast right-wing conspiracy." David Freedlander tracks down the conservative journalists, opposition researchers, and GOP lawmakers who terrorized her and her husband in the '90s. Some are remorseful but many are not.
HEARTACHE
The dogma that saturated fat causes heart disease is crumbling after a Cambridge University analysis of 76 studies found no evidence that low consumption of total saturated fats cases heart disease. Yet, the American Heart Association is holding fast to the notion that low-fat diets are necessary for a healthy heart. Why? The quick answer, says cardiologist Barbara H. Roberts, is money.
