DEVASTATION
With estimates of more than 10,000 dead and terrifying scenes of destruction, typhoon Haiyan has left havoc in its wake in the Philippines. The scale of devastation is now threatening to engulf the amount of resources deployed to control the situation. More than 600,000 people have been displaced, and in one city, Tacloban, the UN is reporting a mass grave with 300 to 500 bodies. Tacloban was hit by waves and winds up to 235 mph. Most of Haiyan's damage was caused by huge waves, with 70 to 80 percent of structures hit in ruins. From floating bodies to fury at the government, a survivor details the destruction. Plus, see photos of the devastation.
VETERANS DAY

The Army's first statue of a female soldier was unveiled last week, just in time for Veterans Day. It's a powerful symbol and a call to recognize the service of women in the military. By Mariette Kalinowski.

TOUGH TALK

Open up your notebooks, RNC. In an interview with Fox News Sunday, recently reelected New Jersey Governor Chris Christie ascribed his win to reaching out to minorities, saying, "I've worked hard with the Hispanic community to let them see how our policies can help their families. I've worked hard with the African-American community. I've worked hard with seniors and students." After putting up numbers in the Hispanic and black communities not seen by Republicans in years, Christie advised his fellow party-members "If you want to win a vote by that kind of margin, if you want to attract the majority of the Hispanic vote, if you want to nearly triple your African-American vote, you need to show up. You need to go into those neighborhoods, you need to campaign in places."

OVER THE TOP

The private school authority in Pakistan overseeing as many as 40,000 affiliated schools has banned I Am Malala, by Malala Yousafzai, the teenage education activist shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012. The chief of the All Pakistan Private School Federation said the book contains anti-Islamic and anti-Pakistani content. Those officials are also pushing for the government to ban the books as well, arguing it is being promoted by Western governments and has inappropriately positive things to say about novelist Salman Rushdie.

misleading

Is this straight from the Newsroom or what? On Sunday's 60 Minutes, Lara Logan apologized for airing a story two weeks ago in which security contractor Dylan Davies misled the program into believing his story about rushing to the American diplomatic mission in Benghazi on the night of the Sept. 11, 2012, attack. Logan said the story had been in the works for a year, and it was recently revealed that Davies had provided different accounts to his employer and the FBI than he had to journalists at the news program.
