NEGOTIATIONS

For decades, the United States has urged foreign governments not to free prisoners who have killed Americans. But a man who murdered an American was freed this week by Israel in a prisoner-release deal encouraged by Secretary of State John Kerry. The Daily Beast's Eli Lake reports on the case of Al-Haaj Othman Amar Mustafa, a Palestinian convicted in 1991 of killing of a U.S. Marine.

X-FILES

Conspiracy theorists can stand a little taller and wear their tinfoil hats with pride today, as the existence of the covert Area 51 has been officially confirmed by the CIA in newly declassified documents obtained by George Washington University. The report documents the development of the secret U-2 spy plane, the history of how the covert area came into existence, and points to the precise location on an Atomic Energy Commission map. Because of the developmental plane's never-before-witnessed operating altitude and the way the silver wings would reflect the sun—seeming to be on fire—the UFO sightings started pouring in to air traffic controllers and the Air Force. The Air Force recorded the reports in their Operation BLUE BOOK, and investigators tried to calm concerned citizens by attributing the sightings to natural phenomena because they could not reveal the true, but classified, cause. Sorry, truthers.

DAY OF RAGE

The violence has stretched into a third day in Cairo as thousands filled the streets in response to the Muslim Brotherhood'a call for people to march in protest of the Egyptian military's killing of more than 600 people. Early reports Friday said live ammunition was being used on demonstrators, and that 17 people were killed in clashes with the military, in which tear gas, bird shot, and heavy gunfire were used. The deaths came from across the country as violence erupted both in Cairo and other cities like Alexandria.

BABY STEPS

In her first public appearance since being rescued last weekend from an alleged abductor, 16-year-old Hannah Anderson attended a fundraiser in San Diego clad in sunglasses and unwilling to speak to the press. "This is a small community that we are a part of," Anderson's father, Brett, told reporters outside the restaurant where the event was held. "The community came together putting on this great fundraiser for Hannah...and this is how Lakeside rolls. So I just wanted to say how much we appreciate it from everybody, the community, family, friends for being here...and local sheriffs and law enforcement." Search warrants were unsealed this week revealing that James Lee DiMaggio, who was shot and killed by authorities, tortured Anderson's mother and brother before killing them and making off with Hannah.

TRUE OR FALSE

The Butler, based on the true story of long-time White House butler Eugene Allen, hits theaters today. So how much of the buzzy film is real and how much has been slightly embellished? The Daily Beast's Kevin Fallon presents a guide. (Warning: spoilers ahead.)
