PANDEMIC

Protests and riots are spreading around the world. Where do they come from and what do they signify? The Daily Beast's Christopher Dickey investigates.

WHERE'S EDWARD

Just two days afer U.S. officials filed a sealed criminal complaint against Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old NSA leaker reportedly left Hong Kong on a flight bound for Moscow. Russia's national airline Aeroflot confirmed that he was on a one-way flight bound for Moscow, but said his final destination could not be confirmed. The move was discouraging for Washington, who had issued a legal request on the "provisional warrant of arrest" for Hong Kong to return him. In the end, the Hong Kong conclused that the request "did not fully comply with the legal requirements" under their own law.

CRISIS ON THE HORIZON

As Wall Street money flows to Republicans, Democrats are scrambling to get back in big money's good graces, writes The Daily Beast's Lawrence Lessig.

OUTRAGE

Gunmen in Pakistan killed nine tourists who had stopped to rest while climbing one of the world's highest peaks, Nanga Parbat, Sunday night. Five Ukrainians, three Chinese, and one Russian were among the victims of the attack, which police say included a team of at least 15 gunmen, donning uniforms used by a local paramilitary force. A local branch of the Taliban has already stepped forward to claim responsibility for the incident—an attack that was allegedly in retaliation against the death of their leader, killed by a drone strike. The shooting spree comes on the heels of multiple deadly bombings in Pakistan, where
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is battling to keep the peace.

KNOW YOUR CROWD

Not a fun Saturday night for Nancy Pelosi. The California Congresswoman was booed on Saturday at this year's Netroots Nation conference after she defended President Obama's response to the NSA leaks—and saying that alleged leaker Edward Snowden broke the law. The heckling began when Pelosi said the country needs "balance" between security and privacy, with an audience member shouting "it's not balance, it's not constitutional! No more secret laws!" Although the moderators tried to quiet the heckler, Pelosi said she "welcome the challenges" from the crowd, but she was booed again when she said "as far as Snowden: he did violate the law in terms of releasing those documents." Tough crowd: at least one person then yelled "you suck!"
