HERO TRAITOR

The U.S. Army private's court-martial finally gets under way Monday, nearly three years after his leak to WikiLeaks unmasked the war on terror's secret diplomacy. The Daily Beast's Eli Lake reports.

BLAZE

A fire that broke out early Monday morning in a Chinese slaughterhouse has killed 119, state media reported. There are still some workers unaccounted for, although it's unclear how many. More than 300 workers were in the plant at the time, and China's official news agency, Xinhua, reported that about 100 workers had managed to escape. "The complicated interior structure of the prefabricated house in which the fire broke out and the narrow exits have added difficulties to the rescue work," Xinhua reported, although China's safety record is infamously abysmal. People took to China's social-media website Weibo to express their anger, writing things like "was this place ever regularly inspected by fire safety authorities?"

DEADLY

A suicide bomber attacked a market in eastern Afghanistan on Monday morning, killing at least ten children and a police officer. At least 15 others were injured. Local officials said a military patrol was the target, and coalition soldiers were among the dead. The police chief in the province said the bomb detonated as school was letting out for lunch.

AFLAME

A mix of dry brush and high winds has caused a California wildfire to spread quickly, forcing roughly 3,000 people from their homes as emergency workers struggle to contain the blaze. Already six homes have been destroyed and 15 others damaged by the fire, which has made its way through 40 square miles of the Angeles National Forest mountains just north of Los Angeles. The thick smoke has made it difficult for authorities to estimate exactly how big the fire is, but it appears as though roughly 20 perecent of the blaze has been contained. More than 2,000 firefighters are on hand to try to stop the fire from spreading.

Klaidman: Where Holder 'Fell Down'

On 'Face the Nation,' Newsweek and The Daily Beast's Dan Klaidman said that Attorney General Eric Holder fell into the trap of acting too much like a 'prosecutor' without seeing the bigger picture, but he now wants to 'update and reform the guidelines that cover interactions between the justice department and the press.'
