CABLE NEWS CRAZY

The Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan says the network has turned the broad tradition of Anglo-American conservatism into Southern Fanaticism—and he wanted to see them crack in their batter.

ALMOST THERE

So soon? The counting of absentee ballots in Miami-Dade County, Fla., was finally completed Thursday morning, after election officials pulled an all-nighter to tally the last batch of votes. However, there are still provisional ballots that must be counted, and officials announce that official results won't be announced until Friday. Not only is Florida the only state yet to announce a winner in the presidential election, there are several tight local elections awaiting outcomes. South Florida made national headlines on election night when voters were still waiting to cast ballots at 1:30 a.m. in some precincts after waiting up to seven hours in line. So things are running real smoothly down there in Florida.

THE OBAMA CONQUEST

Obama's rise through state and national politics—not to mention a second term—may be marked by key moments of serendipity. But don't forget that the president also relentlessly seizes his chances and makes every one of them count, writes Daniel Klaidman in Newsweek.

TRIUMPHANT

Former U.S. representative Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, came face-to-face on Thursday with Jared Lee Loughner, the man who shot her in the head during a deadly rampage that killed six and wounded a dozen others. Loughner received a sentence of life in prison. Kelly addressed the court on Giffords's behalf. "You tried to create a world as dark and evil as your own," Kelly said. "Remember this : You failed." Loughner pleaded guilty to the attack, sparing himself the death penalty, although he faces life in prison for the January 2011 shooting. In the race for Giffords's former House seat, her hand-picked successor trailed his Republican challenger by several hundred votes on Wednesday, although a final result had not yet been announced.
