COUNTDOWN

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will team up with newly-minted Oscar-winner Meryl Streep for an onstage presentation at Newsweek & The Daily Beast's third annual Women in the World Summit, which kicks off next week at Lincoln Center in New York City. Inspiring women from around the globe—including Nobel-winner Leymah Gbowee, Angelina Jolie, Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg, Madeleine Albright, IMF chief Christine Lagarde, California Attorney General Kamala Harris, Israeli opposition leader Tzipi Livni, The New York Times's Jill Abramson, Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga, Nancy Pelosi, and many more—will join host Tina Brown for a three-day event to spotlight the urgent challenges facing women today, from forced marriage in Pakistan to women's role in national security. POLL

Iranians went to the polls Friday in a new parliamentary vote, the first in the country since the disputed 2009 reelection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the mass protests and crackdown that ensued. More than 48 million people are eligible at the 47,000 polling stations set up, but some of Ahmadinejad's supporters are reportedly asking voters to stay away. The opposition Green Movement is not taking part this year, with many of its leaders under house arrest or in jail. The results of the elections are unlikely to effect Iran's stance on its controversial nuclear program—the topic of which is expected to dominate talks between President Obama and Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday. Official results are expected on Sunday or Monday.

DEBT

All but two of the European Union's leaders met in Brussels on Friday to sign a new fiscal treaty in an attempt to prevent the region from running up huge debts like those that prompted bailouts in Greece, Ireland, and Portugal. Britain and the Czech Republic refused to sign the pact, fearing that the agreement will not be enforced effectively. But EU President Herman Van Rompuy vowed that the pact would create conditions that would allow for a return to growth, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it was a "great leap" toward stability and political union in the region.

SUPER TUESDAY

After sweeping Tuesday's primaries in Arizona and Michigan, Romney holds a strong lead in the big prize of Virginia, despite voter skepticism in the Super Tuesday state. According to a new poll, 56 percent of people likely to vote in Virginia's primary say they support the former Massachusetts governor for the GOP nomination, while 21 percent are supporting Rep. Ron Paul. Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich are working on their strategies in other states. Santorum appealed to religious voters in Washington on Thursday, while Gingrich has been on the attack in Georgia, slamming his two adversaries and hoping to win Tennessee and Oklahoma on the Super Tuesday.

RELIEF

After weeks of shelling and sniper fire from Syrian forces, the people who remain in the Baba Amro district of Homs may finally get some much-needed aid today. A Red Cross aid convoy is preparing to enter the pummeled district, as the U.N. human rights offices voices concern over reports of mass executions by government forces. The rebel-run Free Syrian Army began withdrawal from Homs on Thursday. A Syrian official has since declared the area "cleansed" of the "foreign-backed armed groups of terrorists."
