Asian indices were higher in overnight trading, with the Nikkei rising 2.01% after hitting a two-and-a-half year closing low on Tuesday. Europe is sharply higher and U.S. futures are up. The German constitutional court threw out a lawsuit by German professors that aimed to make Greek bailouts illegal. The court did however limit Germany's ability to react to the debt crisis by finding that future bailouts must be voted on by parliament. Meanwhile, German chancellor Angela Merkel delivered a pro-EU speech to the German Bundestag and affirmed the legality of the Greek bailout, this after losing regional elections. Despite all this, 10-year Greek debt is yielding over 20% for the first time ever.  Check out details on the global economic crisis and ways to cash in on it > Meanwhile, industrial production in Germany surged 4% in July from the previous month, the most in more than a year. Production of consumer goods rose 2.5%, while that of durable consumer goods surged 15.4%, and investment goods were up 7.5%. Of course, by now July seems like ages ago. Check out the hardest working countries in the world > Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's austerity plan which was approved by the cabinet yesterday, will face a confidence vote in the Senate today. The plan calls for an increase in VAT, a 3% charge on incomes over €300,000 and a higher retirement age for women. Now here is the sad story of how Italy got to be such a mess > Home prices in the UK fell 1.2% in August from July, posting the first decline in four months. On a year-over-year basis they fell 3.9%. Bank of England meanwhile is expected to hold interest rates steady tomorrow as the economy continues to struggle.  Bank of America has reshuffled its top management. CEO Brian Moynihan announced late yesterday that Sallie Krawcheck, president of global wealth and investment management, is leaving. Meanwhile, the bank is effectively splitting Merrill Lynch into two parts. Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz was fired yesterday and now the company's board is open to selling it to the right bidder. Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney, Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann will meet at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California today, in the first of three GOP presidential debates, over the next three weeks. This would be the first debate appearance for Perry. Australian GDP rose 1.2% in the second quarter from the previous quarter, and 1.4% from a year before. Growth is however expected to soften in the second half as recovery from the flood fades and household consumption weakens because of global economic uncertainty. Nigeria is introducing the yuan into its foreign exchange reserves and will sign a currency swap agreement with China. The country's central bank is expected to purchase the yuan through bond sales by the People's Bank of China as well as yuan-denominated trade settlements.
