Read This, Skip That ....

GEEK POWER
Bill Gates is throwing his weight behind gun control, and the NRA better be scared. Cliff Schechter writes that Gates and his wife, Melinda, donated $1 million to a Washington state campaign requiring universal background checks on all firearm purchases. Not only do the Gates offer financial backing, their famous name grants legitimacy and attention that the NRA's C-list celebs just can't.
HAVE IT YOUR WAY
Burger King has announced its decision to merge with Canadian chain Tim Hortons and enjoy the tax benefits of the Great White North. Now, Democratic politicians are unleashing a whopper of hate, reports Tim Mak.
BLOOD MONEY

ISIS is demanding $6.6 million and a prisoner swap for the release of an unidentified 26-year-old American woman, who was taken in Syria last year while doing humanitarian work. There are at least four Americans being held in Syria by ISIS, including journalist Steven Sotloff, who was threatened with execution last week following James Foley's beheading. Despite renewed hope after a journalist was released without ransom last weekend by another al Qaeda offshoot, it appears high ransoms are still in demand by the group. ISIS's demands include the release of Aafia Siddiqui, who was convicted in the U.S. of trying to kill American officials.

WILD WEST
The Tohono O'odham reservation in southern Arizona is a Connecticut-size swath of land that border-control agents govern with an unchecked iron grip. Caitlin Dickson reports how the feds exercise lawless rule over the hotspot for human and drug smuggling and how that power is often taken out on unarmed Americans.
RED HANDED
The Kremlin was caught sending paratroopers into Ukraine, providing growing evidence that Russia is attempting a stealth invasion. Anna Nemstova reports that an unnamed Russian defense minister claimed the border crossing was an "accident." But as a result of this secrecy, Russian servicemen are dying anonymously in Ukraine to the horror of their loved ones in the Motherland.
