A Malaysian passenger airliner has crashed near the Russian border in Ukraine on Thursday. The Boeing plane had 295 people on board and was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. TOUGH GUY

In an interview with Guardian Editor in Chief Alan Rusbridger and reporter Ewen MacAskill in Moscow, Edward Snowden declares that, "Regardless of what happens, if I end up in chains in Guantánamo I can live with that." Snowden was asked if he'd rather be in the West, to which he responded, "I'm much happier here in Russia than I would be in facing an unfair trial in which I can't even present a public-interest defense to a jury of my peers." He went on to say, "We've asked the government again and again to provide for a fair trial, and they've declined, and I feel very fortunate to have received asylum."

HIGH LIFE

BEACH WEDDING

Same-sex couples can enjoy a slice of key lime pie as wedding cake. On Thursday, Circuit Judge Luis M. Garcia overturned Florida's constitutional ban on gay marriage, but it only applies to the Keys. However, Garcia's decision only applies to Monroe County, which includes the Florida Keys. Garcia said marriage licenses could start being issued to same-sex couples on Tuesday

GENDER GAP

A recent article (from a non-scientist) argued that "biology and nature sway females away from science." Not so fast, says Tauriq Moosa, who talks to actual scientists about why the notion that "females as a whole are not hugely engaged by science" is just plain untrue.
