20/20 HINDSIGHT
Edward Snowden genuinely believed his interview last week with Vladimir Putin would press the Russian president on Moscow's mass surveillance, but he instantly regretted it, according to two Snowden insiders. Noah Shachtman reports that Snowden had been looking for a chance to prove wrong those who believed he had become a Kremlin tool. His softball question of Putin did the opposite.
VALUE OF A LIFE

Sherpas who toil on Mount Everest are considering a "work stoppage" after the Nepalese government offered meager compensation to the families of those killed. At least 13 died in last week's avalanche, which marked the worst single-day death toll in Everest history. On Sunday, the government offered 40,000 rupees, or just $408, to the loved ones of Sherpas killed in the accident. The Nepal Mountaineering Association has pressed the government to increase the compensation to $1,041, but many disappointed Sherpas proposed going on strike to protest. Some had already decided to quit scaling the most imposing mountain on earth after, as one Sherpa caught in the avalanche said, seeing "the hands and legs of climbers scattered around the avalanche site."

'Act of Murder'

On Monday, prosecutors in South Korea announced charges were being brought against more crew members in the ferry accident that has resulted in at least 64 dead and 238 missing. Two first mates, one second mate, and a chief engineer were arrested after Captain Lee Joon-seok and two other crew members were already arrested last week. South Korean President Park Geun-hye said the crew's abandonment was tantamount to murder. "Above all, the conduct of the captain and some crew members is unfathomable from the viewpoint of common sense, and it was like an act of murder that cannot and should not be tolerated," she told aides.

NOSTALGIA
Does anyone really believe Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, or Chris Christie can contend with Hillary Clinton? Robert Shrum writes at least Jeb Bush, the establishment's establishmentarian, would put up a fight.
STIFF COMPETITION

Despite the high price tag, prestigious private colleges are turning away high-school seniors in droves. The numbers for the 2013-2014 application cycle show the battle to get into one of America's elite universities has largely only increased. While there are exceptions, such as Harvard, which rose from 5.8 to 5.9 percent in its acceptances, many schools hit historic lows this year. Stanford is believed to have the lowest acceptance rate in the nation at 5 percent, down from 20 percent two decades ago. Columbia, the University of Chicago, Yale, and the University of Pennsylvania also saw declines in acceptance rates, the latter two to historic lows. Admission officials cite how much easier the almost-universal Common Application makes it to apply to multiple schools, as well as the increasing number of foreign students applying to add to the pool.
