HYPOCRITE ALERT

Just a couple weeks ago, Sarah Palin was railing against the influence of political consultants at a conservative conference. But FEC filings show that her political action committee—which she just relaunched with the slogan "Loaded for Bear"—has doled out millions dollars to those same consultants. John Avlon reports.

BUZZ KILL

A mysterious malady that has been killing honeybees en masse since 2005 has drastically expanded this year, wiping out as much as 40 to 50 percent of the hives needed to pollinate America's fruits and vegetables. Scientists have been unable to determine the cause of the mass deaths, but some beekeepers and researchers blame a new class of pesticides called neonicotinoids that are now bred into plants themselves. (Not surprisingly, the pesticide industry disputes this.) Until this year, beekeepers in California's San Joaquin Valley had only been losing a third of their bees, but the deaths have increased dramatically this year. The largest farm, in South Dakota, said it lost 55 percent of its bees this year. The EPA has sent a top official and chemical experts to California for discussions.

RISKY BUSINESS

She's the only abortion provider in a state that just passed crazy restrictions. And she's not backing down. Winston Ross goes to the culture war's new frontier: Fargo, North Dakota. Plus, North Dakota women who made the choice to abort tell their stories.

RACIAL SLUR

Alaskan GOP Rep. Don Young disrespected a large portion of the American population. But he meant no disrespect by it. That's the excuse Rep. Young is giving after finding himself in hot water for calling Hispanic migrant workers the racial slur "wetbacks." In an interview, Young told a story about being young and his father using "50-60 wetbacks with tomatoes" on his farm. Late Thursday, Young elaborated on his "I heard it growing up" claim in a detailed statement released to the press. It appears to be a banner week for foolish apologies—with Young's falling just one day after rapper Rick Ross lamely apologized for his date-rape song, claiming he never actually used the word "rape." Well done, all.

MUENSTER CRIMES

The nickname "Big Cheese" has never been so well-deserved. An Illinois man named Veniamin Konstantinovich Balika has been charged for stealing 21 tons of Muenster from a Wisconsin cheese company and attempting to sell all 42,000 pounds of it at a New Jersey turnpike rest stop. The 34-year-old dairy thief fooled the company's owner, presenting him with the proper paperwork to pick up a shipment, but was busted on the side of the highway with his stinky haul, valued at a whopping $200,000. But there could be a silver lining to all this cheesiness. If the Muenster passes NJ health inspections, it could be donated to charity.
