TRANSPARENCY, TRANSHMARENCY

Trying to force the Washington Post to change real quotes was just the latest White House obfuscation. Team Obama has been at it for years. Reporters and insiders tell The Daily Beast's Lloyd Grove their stories of trying to get past the Obama censors.

50 YEARS LATER

Americans often talk as if our country has a long way to go on race, but, in fact, we're right on the brink of realizing Martin Luther King's dream. Joshua DuBois reflects in Newsweek.

"GRAVE CONCERN"

The Obama administration is now considering a potential military response to the Syrian conflict that "could range from a cruise missile strike to a more sustained air campaign against Syria." The news of a possible escalation came a day after reports of a suspected chemical weapons attack that killed hundreds of civilians in the war-torn country, and one year after Obama said such an attack would cross a "red line" for the U.S. In an interview with CNN, Obama said the U.S. was facing a more abbreviated time frame in light of the increasing violence in Syria. The president also said officials were gathering information on yesterday's attack, but that "what we've seen indicates that this is clearly a big event of grave concern."

STRIKE

The Israeli military successfully bombed a "terror site" in southern Lebanon on Friday in retaliation for four rockets that were launched from its northern neighbor on Thursday constituting "a blatant breach of Israeli sovereignty that jeopardized Israeli civilian life." The target, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine General Command, was surprised by the attack, as a different organization, the Lebanese branch of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, a terrorist group affiliated with al Qaeda, had already claimed responsibility for the rockets. This was Israel's first air attack on Lebanon since its war with Hezbollah in 2006, a 34-day war in which the Islamist group fired as many as 4,000 rockets into Israel.

NO WOMAN SAFE

A female photojournalist on assignment in Mumbai was raped by five men on Thursday night. The woman, in her 20s, had been photographing an abandoned textile mill when, according to Police Commissioner Satya Pal Singh, "Five men who were inside the derelict textile mill first accused the woman's companion of being wanted for a murder, tied him up with a belt, then took the woman aside and took turns raping her." The news of her attack brings increased attention to India and the country's record of attacks on women, in particular, the 2012 gang-rape of a 23-year-old physiotherapist on a Delhi bus that resulted in her death. Five men have been arrested in connection with this most recent crime.
