EU to receive Nobel Peace Prize at Oslo ceremony
The European Union has received the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize at a ceremony in Norway. The award comes for the group's role in "stabilizing" Europe and transforming it "from a continent of war to a continent of peace."

Morsi grants police powers to Egyptian military
Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi has granted the army powers of arrest in the run up to the referendum on the country's controversial new constitution. The move comes one day ahead of planned mass opposition protests.

Germany expels Syrian embassy staff
Germany has told a handful of staff at the Syrian embassy to leave. The gesture comes as EU ministers meet to discuss measures that could be taken to help the Syrian opposition and crack down on the Assad regime.

Two officials killed in separate Afghan attacks
A women's affairs official and a provincial police chief have been killed in separate attacks in Afghanistan. Nobody has yet claimed responsibility for the two attacks.

Taliban attack Pakistani police station
Taliban suicide bombers have attacked a Pakistani police station, killing at least six people near the militant stronghold of North Waziristan along the Afghan border. Three policemen were among the dead.

UN appeals to send aid to Filipino typhoon victims
The United Nations has appealed for $65 million in emergency aid for millions of victims of a typhoon that hit the southern Philippines last week. At least 647 people have been killed with 780 still missing.

Off target, Greece extends bond buyback deadline
Greece has announced it will accept offers from bondholders for a day longer than originally scheduled as it seeks to buy back its debt for knockdown prices. Apparently, investors are reluctant to take the huge losses.
Auto Industry
Opel's Bochum plant to stop production of cars
German carmaker Opel, a part of General Motors' European division, has announced it will stop producing complete cars at its Bochum facility in Germany by 2016. But the plant may still make components.
