Cheat Sheet - Susan Rice Is Out. What a Shame

Today: 18 Golden Globes Snubs & Surprises , CIA Tortured Terror Suspect , Prank DJs Moved to Safehouse
Cheat Sheet: Afternoon

SHE'S OUT

Facing an avalanche of partisan criticism, diplomat Susan Rice withdrew her name from consideration for secretary of state on Thursday. That's a real shame, writes The Daily Beast's Michael Tomasky. No modern Senate has voted down a secretary of state choice--never mind over a few sentences spoken on some television shows. As for her future...national security adviser?

AWARDS WATCH

The Golden Globe nominations were announced Thursday morning, showering Lincoln with seven nods and handing Argo and Les Miserables four nods each. Yet the Hollywood Foreign Press Association showed no love for Anthony Hopkins, Robert De Niro, or Batman—while Nicole Kidman and Richard Gere eked out surprise mentions. The Daily Beast's Ramin Setoodeh on what it all means for the Oscars. Also, see all the nominees.

HISTORIC DECISION

Khaled el-Masri was tortured by the CIA, the European Court of Human Rights determined Thursday, in a landmark judgment. The ruling was unanimous: el-Masri, a German citizen, was wrongly detained, sodomized, shackled, and beaten in front of Macedonian state police. Macedonia was also found guilty of secretly imprisoning, torturing and abusing el-Masri, who was suspected of terrorist affiliations. The court's decision was the first time the CIA's treatment of terror suspects has been deemed as torture.

SPECIAL PROTECTION

Staff at the Australian radio station behind the royal hoax gone wrong said Thursday that they are being moved into a safe house and protected by bodyguards after receiving death threats. Meanwhile, the body of Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse who allegedly killed herself after being fooled by DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian's impersonation of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles, is being released to undertakers after the coroner issued a report on the suicide earlier on Thursday. Australian police have launched an investigation into the death threats against the DJ's.

WORK IT

The job market is recovering from its post-Sandy problems. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported first time unemployment claims fell sharply last week to 343,000, from 372,000 in the prior week. That low level is consistent with decent hiring, and marks a sharp fall from Sandy-inflated figures in November.

Matt Drudge's 'N-Word' Problem

Did notorious aggregator Matt Drudge go too far when he used the 'N-word' repeatedly in a headline yesterday? On today's NewsBeast, John Avlon talks with Lloyd Grove, who wrote about Drudge's use of the taboo word, about whether the move was racially motivated or simply a bid for attention.
