As Hurricane Sandy edges its way up the US Atlantic coast, parts of New York are being evacuated in preparation. The storm has already killed 57 people in the Caribbean.

Several people feared dead in Nigeria church bombing
A suicide bomber has driven a vehicle packed with explosives into a Catholic church in northern Nigeria, causing numerous casualties. Christian mobs have taken to the streets targeting Muslims in reprisal attacks.
Elections
Lithuania casts votes in second round
After an initial round of voting failed to provide a clear majority in legislative elections two weeks ago, Lithuanians return to the polls today to pick between three parties.
Syria
Violence rages on in Syria despite cease-fire
Violence continued in Syria on the third day of what was meant to be a four-day truce for the Eid al-Adha Muslim holiday. Meanwhile, the UN-Arab League peace envoy is planning a new bid to halt the conflict.
Eurozone crisis
Germany rules out further Greek debt write-off
Berlin has ruled out allowing public creditors to write off Greek debt as a way of helping the country overcome its financial woes. However, Germany's finance minister said he is open to other ways of helping Athens.
Spain
Basque separatist nabbed by French police
French police have arrested two wanted ETA members. Pro-independence Basque groups criticized theircapture, which takes to 24 the number of ETA members arrested in the past year. 16 arrests have been in France.

Australia unveils plans to profit from Asia's rise
Australia's government has announced a plan aimed at deepening its already strong ties with countries in Asia. The long-term aim is to profit from the rise of Asia's booming economies.
Formula One
Sebastian Vettel wins Indian Grand Prix
Germany's Sebastian Vettel has won the Indian Grand Prix to move a step closer to defending his Formula One championship. The Red Bull driver, who started from the pole position, led the race from start to finish.
