EMPLOYMENT Democrats engaged in some of the same use of misleading claims and out-of-context quotation for which Republicans were pilloried during their national convention in Tampa last week. But one of the evening’s most surprising statistics—Bill Clinton’s assertion that over the past fifty years, Democrats have added nearly twice as many jobs to the economy as Republicans—seems to be accurate. Clinton said that 24 million jobs were added during the 28 years Republicans held the White House, while 42 million jobs were added during the 24 years Democrats did. The Secret Service said that it is looking into whether or not claims that a group of hackers stole copies of Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s tax returns are true. The person or persons claiming responsibility for the alleged theft are asking $1 million to keep the records private. “At this time there is no evidence that our systems have been compromised or that there was any unauthorized access to the data in question,” said a representative for Pricewaterhouse Coopers, the accounting firm that handles Romney’s files. Representatives for Romney’s campaign, which have only released the Bain Capital co-founder’s filings for 2010 and an estimate for 2011, declined to comment. UNMANNED The Department of Defense has approved the sale of American drones to 66 countries—but Congress and the State Department would have to open up foreign markets for export before sales could go through. Richard Genaille, deputy director of the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency, declined to name the countries to which the sale of drones would be allowed. Genaille recently told a defense industry conference that the United States does not have a comprehensive policy in place regarding the foreign sale of the unmanned military aircraft that have been an important part of the Obama administration’s counterterrorism policy. | |
