The president’s new ad trumpeting bin Laden’s killing may well politicize national security, as the GOP complains. But Obama’s just taking a page from a playbook the Republicans have trusted since 2001, says Michelle Cottle.

HACKING

Members of the British Parliament who are investigating phone hacking called Rupert Murdoch “not a fit person” to lead News Corp. and said he had misled them. Murdoch “turned a blind eye and exhibited willful blindness,” said the report by the 11-member House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport. It also claimed that if Murdoch had been “entirely open” to his shareholders and lawmakers, the hacking scandal would have been discovered months earlier. The report also criticized Murdoch’s son James, saying he should ultimately take responsibility, as well as Les Hinton, Colin Myler, and Tom Crone, three former executives at News International, News Corp.’s British wing.

DEMONSTRATIONS

Happy May Day! Workers across the globe planned strikes and marches to demand better labor conditions on Tuesday, while Occupy Wall Street hopes to launch a spring awakening of its protest movement. Occupy called for “no work, no school, no shopping, no banking” throughout the country, as spokesman Mark Bray said the movement wants to show that the “99 percenters make things run in this country.” A solidarity march throughout New York, the birthplace of the movement, is planned. Meanwhile, thousands of workers in the Philippines, Malaysia, and Taiwan marched for pay hikes, saying that their pay has not been on par with global consumer prices. Greek workers, subject to harsh austerity cuts in the wake of a European Union bailout, also planned rallies for Tuesday.

Controversial

A White House official revealed Monday that remotely-piloted drones are used to kill suspected terrorists, while acknowledging for the first time that these strikes occasionally kill civilians. Counterterrorism adviser John Brennan said the deaths of innocent people by drones are “exceedingly rare,” though a Washington think tank revealed Monday that as many as 300 civilians deaths have been linked to drones since President Obama took office. Brennan said the U.S. “conducts targeted strikes against specific al Qaeda terrorists” using drones.

EDWARDS TRIAL
