CHEAT SHEET
MUST READS FROM ALL OVER

L'AFFAIRE DSK
1. The French Anti-Semitism Myth

Dominique Strauss-Kahn fits the stereotype of rich, leftist, Jewish
banker preying on the poor and getting ethnic support from notable
friends. But there have been few anti-Jewish attacks on him in France,
showing that claims of an anti-Semitism epidemic in the country are
overblown, writes The Daily Beast's Eric Alterman.

AWKWARD
2. Obama's Speech Raises Tensions With Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not like President Obama's
speech yesterday. Hours before Obama came out in support of an
Israeli-Palestinian peace deal based on Israel's returning to its 1967
borders, Netanyahu made a furious phone call to Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton in an attempt to change the president's mind. Shortly
after the speech, Netanyahu called Obama's statements "indefensible".
Obama's speech and Netanyahu's rebuke came a day before the two are
scheduled to meet in Washington. Relations between the two leaders have
always been tense, but they're especially high now. Netanyahu says he
believes Obama is pushing Israel too far and wants him to use the U.S.'s
diplomatic clout to protect Israel from an upcoming U.N. Vote on
Palestinian statehood. Obama has indicated he'll veto the vote,
scheduled for September, but it's unclear how far he'll go in convincing
other countries to do the same as long as Netanyahu refuses to get
onboard with a plan to return his state to its 1967 borders.

QUESTIONS
3. Goldman Execs Expect Subpoenas

Goldman Sachs executives say they expect U.S. prosecutors to serve them
with subpoenas soon for information about the investment company's
mortgage business. The subpoenas would follow a report by a Senate
subcommittee on the financial crisis that accused Goldman of betting
against the housing market, misleading investors, and mismanaging
conflicts of interest. Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), the subcommittee's
leader, said Goldman should be criminally investigated and referred his
group's findings to the Justice Department. But it's unclear whether the
subpoenas will result in criminal charges. Goldman said it disagreed
with the subcommittee's findings. Executives say they expect subpoenas
within days.

RESIGNATION
4. Tepco Chief Steps Down

If nuclear catastrophe wasn't enough to get the head of Japan's nuclear
utility Tepco to resign, record losses are. After facing months of
criticism over his company's handling of the Fukshima nuclear crisis,
Tepco President Masataka Shimizu resigned as the utility announced
losses of $15.3 billion, the biggest ever for a non-financial Japanese
company. The utility faces another bill, potentially in the tens of
billions of dollars, to compensate victims of the Fukushima Daiichi
nuclear disaster. Officials have asked for government help in
compensating victims, many of whom had to evacuate the disaster site.
People have been asking Shimizu when he would resign for months, and he
had indicated some time this summer. Shimizu, wearing a blue company
jacket, bowed deeply and apologized for the crisis. "I want to
apologize from the bottom of my heart for the accident at Fukushima
Daiichi causing great distress and worry," he said.

BIG BROTHER
5. Congress to Extend Patriot Act

Congressional leaders agreed Thursday to extend the Patriot Act for
another four years, about a week before the controversial law was set to
expire. Congress is set to vote on the measure, passed in the wake of
the September 11 attacks and long debated as an infringement of civil
liberties, within a week. Three key provisions would be extended under
the vote - including a controversial measure from 2004 that allows for
secret intelligence surveillance of non-U.S. citizens without having to
prove any connection to terrorism. Some have questioned the act's
usefulness following the death of Osama bin Laden, but Attorney General
Eric Holder has stressed "now more than ever, we need access to the
crucial authorities in the Patriot Act."
