SPRINT'S FIRST WINDOWS PHONE 7 HANDSET WILL HAVE UPDATED SOFTWARE, REPORT CLAIMS
Microsoft?s first major Windows Phone 7 update will reportedly arrive preinstalled on the HTC Arrive from Sprint. The "NoDo" update includes cut-and-paste functionality, along with faster application loading.

RUGGEDIZED SMARTPHONE STICKS WITH WINDOWS MOBILE 6.5
Getac is sticking with Windows Mobile 6.x for a ruggedized mobile phone that includes a GPS receiver and a 3.2 megapixel camera. The MH132 has a 3.2-inch touchscreen, a 600MHz processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, plus the ability to shrug off liquids and five-foot drops, according to the company.

INTEL COUNTERS ARM WITH MICRO SERVER CPUS
Intel announced four new x86 processors intended for the "micro server" market, with TDPs ranging from 45 Watts down to 20 Watts. Apparently meant to fend off gains by ARM Holdings licensees, they include: the Xeon E3-1260L and E3-1220L; an un-named "Sandy Bridge"-based offering due later this year; and a Atom variant planned for next year.

NO NEW ZUNES FROM MICROSOFT, REPORT SAYS
Microsoft will not be producing any new Zune PMPs (portable music players), according to a Bloomberg report. The company will still sell existing Zune HD devices, but will concentrate on putting Zune software onto mobile phones, writes reporter Dina Bass.

ARM-BASED SERVER CHIPS WILL SHIP LATER THIS YEAR, SAYS CALXEDA
Early versions of Calxeda?s ARM-based server chips will be reaching OEMs later this year, and systems sporting the quad-core, ARM Cortex-A9 SoCs (systems on chip) could appear on the market soon after, executives add. Meanwhile, Microsoft has told Intel and AMD they need to catch up by cramming more x86 cores onto their CPUs, and one vendor has stuffed 256 Atoms into a single server.

MICROSOFT TO UPDATE FREE TOOL FOR FINDING WINDOWS EMBEDDED UPDATES
Microsoft says it will soon refresh a tool designed to give developers an "easy method to discover, download and install updates" for Windows Embedded operating systems. Version 1.1 of the Windows Embedded Developer Update (WEDU) tool will support the Windows Embedded Standard 7 Service Pack released earlier this week, according to the company.

A POST-PC WORLD? HECK NO, SAYS RESEARCH FIRM
While Apple CEO Steve Jobs and his retinue of media followers are claiming we live in a "post-PC world," that's far from the case, according to IHS iSuppli. In fact, global PC shipments were up 14 percent last year, hitting a record level of 345.4 million units, the research firm says.

MICROSOFT DELAYS WINDOWS PHONE 7 UPDATE
Microsoft is delaying a major Windows Phone 7 update until the second half of March, according to the company. That long-awaited tweak, which will add cut-and-paste functionality and faster application loading, was originally slated for the first two weeks of this month.
