CHEAT SHEET
MUST READS FROM ALL OVER

LIBYAN CRISIS
1. Gaddafi Faked Civilian Deaths

Now this is low: In an interview airing on Sunday, Secretary of Defense
Robert Gates says Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi and his forces are
heaping dead bodies on the sites of last week's allied airstrikes so
they can blame the West for death tolls, according to U.S. intelligence
reports. Last week, Libyan officials counted 100 in a civilian death
toll after the coalition airstrikes, while Western officials insisted no
civilians had been killed, and that the goal of military intervention is
to protect civilians. Meanwhile, John Bolton, the former U.S. ambassador
to the United Nations—and possible GOP candidate in 2012—has a decidedly
undiplomatic solution to the crisis in Libya. He tells Lloyd Grove we
should assassinate the dictator.

2. Rebels Seize Town in Libya

The rebels are on the march once again, now with NATO air support. After
taking the strategic town of Ajdabiya, Gaddafi's opposition seized the
coastal towns of Brega and Ujala without a fight. The rebels also say
they control the key oil town of Ras Lanuf, but this has not been
confirmed, and that they are advancing toward the heartland of Gaddafi's
support. Gaddafi's forces have been focused on shelling Misrata, the
only major city in the west held by the rebels. "He pulled his forces
out of Ajdabiya and Brega so that he puts all his weight in attacking
Misrata and winning so he can control the whole west versus losing the
whole east," a rebel told Reuters. Yesterday, French forces took out
five Libyan warplanes and two helicopters outside Misrata.

DANGEROUS
3. Japan Radiation Levels Skyrocket

There's been another setback in the struggle to get Japan's nuclear
reactors under control. Workers pulled back from the No. 2 reactor when
radiation in the water there was measured at more than 1,000
millisieverts an hour, the highest level detected since the earthquake
and tsunami on March 11, and according to the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, enough to cause hemorrhaging with a single dose.
Several days ago, three workers were injured when they came into contact
with radioactive water in the No. 3 reactor. Officials are unsure where
the water is coming from. The radiation seems to be contained in the
plant, however, and radiation levels outside the plant have returned to
normal.

PROTEST
4. U.K. Rally Organizers Condemn Violence

In a crowd of 250,000 to 500,000, you're bound to get a few bad apples.
The massive London demonstration against budget cuts was for the most
part peaceful, but a band of people in Trafalgar Square threw bricks,
ammonia-filled lightbulbs, and coin-filled fireworks at police, injuring
at least 31 officers, 11 of whom were hospitalized. "All was peaceful
for quite a long while but then for some reason one of them made an
attack on the Olympic [countdown] clock, we moved in to make an arrest,
the next minute they're attacking us and they're trying to attack and
damage the Olympic clock in Trafalgar Square," said Commander Bob
Broadhurst, calling the band of 100 or so people "mindless yobs." Labour
leader Ed Miliband, who spoke at the rally, said there was "no excuse"
for the violence, and the Trade Union Congress, one of the organizers,
condemned the violence as well, saying it should not detract from the
message of the march. So far 201 people have been arrested, and police
are monitoring CCTV footage to identify more rioters.

HAULED OFF
5. Syria Detains Two U.S. Citizens

In the midst of a wave of deadly protests in Syria, two American
citizens have been detained in the volatile nation—apparently part of a
government attempt to pin the uprising on foreign influence. Muhammed
Radwan, an Egyptian-American educated in Austin, Texas, was jailed for
filming the demonstrations, and his "confession" was broadcast on state
TV in order to build the regime's case. Another American, 21-year-old
Pathik Root of Vermont who was studying Arabic in Damascus, had been
missing since March 18 but was recently discovered in Syrian custody
after participating in a protest. Saturday marked the second day of wide
unrest in the nation, and protesters lit several government buildings on
fire in the coastal town of Latakia.
