Cheat Sheet - Obamacare Goes Back to the Supreme Court

Today: Pope Attacks State of Capitalism , Taliban Slams Loya Jirga Bilateral Security Agreement , Deeds: System Failed Son

DÉJÀ VU

If at first you don't succeed, try, try, again. The Supreme Court said Tuesday it will now take another case dealing with President Obama's signature health law, this time over whether businesses have the right to object to birth control mandates for religious reasons. The suits come from Hobby Lobby Inc., an arts and crafts chain based in Oklahoma that has 13,000 full-time workers, and Pennsylvania-based Conestoga Wood Specialties Corp., which employs 950 people in the cabinet industry. Hobby Lobby won its suit in lower courts, while Conestoga lost. The issue before the court has been the subject of around 40 separate lawsuits from private companies, and has roughly split lower court decisions.

HOLY SEE

This might shake up a couple Thanksgiving dinners. Pope Francis has released his first apostolic exhortation, and in it he goes after "a new tyranny" of markets and "idolatry of money." "How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses two points?" he asks. Francis also looked inward, at the Vatican bureaucracy which was the target of scandal under his predecessor. "I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security," he said.

EXCLUSIVE

A security agreement between Afghanistan and the United States—currently in limbo—would withdraw American forces out of the country by the end of next year. But it would also leave behind a contingent of up to 10,000 U.S. soldiers. Taliban commanders contacted by The Daily Beast's Ron Moreau say such a deal would ensure "jihad forever."

TRAGEDY

The Virginia state senator who was stabbed by his son before his son fatally shot himself told a local newspaper that the mental-health system is "responsible" for the tragedy. Creigh Deeds told the Bath County Recorder that the Rockridge County Community Services Board, which oversees mental-health and substance-abuse services, is to blame for the death of his son, Austin. A magistrate judge had ordered mental-health services to evaluate Austin Deeds, but he was turned away due to a bed shortage just one day before he attacked his father and killed himself. "I cry a lot," Deeds told the Recorder in an email. "I can't focus now and talk to anyone."

GET OUT

Even Jack Donaghey would think this is fast. MSNBC reportedly has fired Alec Baldwin for his alleged homophobic comments—and his alleged diva-like behavior on set, reports Page Six. "The decision has been made. He's gone," a source told the Post's Richard Johnson. For those wanting dishy details, this is your day: Baldwin reportedly wouldn't share a makeup room with a woman who has cancer and is sensitive to hairspray. Oh, Alec, no. His show, Up Late with Alec Baldwin, had pretty weak ratings, with his last aired episode only drawing 395,000 viewers. Does this mean we can spend Friday night with Lockup again?
