Martin was at a gas station with his girlfriend. Authorities said that an officer "conducting a routine business check" got out of his vehicle and approached them, at which point the teen pulled out a handgun. "Fearing for his life, the Berkeley officer fired several shots, striking the subject, fatally wounding him," a release from the Berkeley police said. The girlfriend reportedly fled the scene.
