THE THREAT
If the United States wants to "degrade and destroy" the Islamic State effectively, It will have to learn to get inside the terrorists' minds. Christopher Dickey writes there is a tendency to think that they think like us, or that they operate in some fashion similar to the vast bureaucracy of military and security forces we deploy against them. The 9/11 attacks disabused us of that myth.
VERDICT

A high court judge in South Africa says Oscar Pistorius is not guilty of murder in the death of Reeva Steenkamp last year. Judge Thokozile Masipa made the partial announcement in a hushed courtroom Thursday as she summed up the evidence presented to the court. Masipa has yet to rule on other charges of unlawful killing, including culpable homicide. She carefully described Steenkamp's injuries and also summarized the chronology of the slaying. Masipa said at one point that the evidence of some witnesses had to be "rejected in its entirety." The former Olympian sat quietly in the courtroom as people inside and outside awaited the verdict. The defense claimed that he killed his girlfriend when he panicked after mistaking her for an intruder, shooting her through a bathroom door at their home.

Seconds Out
Former White House spokesman Jay Carney may have been hoping for a smooth debut as CNN's "senior political commentator" last night following President Obama's address. Instead, he was verbally mugged on live TV by John McCain, who seemed to be reliving his anger and disappointment that Obama had beaten him so badly in the 2008 campaign, Lloyd Grove writes.
MORON

An elementary school teacher in Utah accidentally shot herself in the leg while in a restroom at the school Thursday. The teacher has not been identified, nor has an explanation been given for why a gun was discharged on school premises. The teacher was a concealed-carry permit holder, and school district policy her allowed to have a gun on campus. According to state law, schools must allow teachers with permits to carry firearms, and parents can't find out if the teacher is carrying.

Americans may not know much about the politicians they send to Washington, but they're very aware that D.C. just isn't working anymore. Eleanor Clift on why some voters don't care which party wins control of the Senate—in their eyes, no matter who wins, nothing would change and "they'd still be arguing."
