TARGETED
ISIS released a video Tuesday showing the beheading of American journalist Steven Sotloff, just weeks after the terrorists executed James Foley. Before Sotloff was abducted in Syria, his fixer's identity may have been compromised. Ben Taub traces Sotloff's last moments of freedom and the Syrian guide who may have put him at risk.
OUT OF AFRICA

The director of the CDC warned that the "window is closing" to stop the Ebola outbreak in West Africa before it goes global. At a press conference Tuesday, Tom Frieden stressed the need to step up efforts to combat the virus, which he described as "spiraling out of control" in Africa. He outlined how hard it is to care for Ebola victims and for the burial teams to "keep up" with the death toll. He also warned that Americans weren't immune from the epidemic. Still, he did offer a few notes of optimism. "We can turn this around," said Frieden. "We can chip away at the challenges." It was announced Tuesday that another American doctor stationed in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, tested positive for the virus. The obstetrician isolated himself and has been transferred to a special Ebola unit. More than 1,300 have died from Ebola so far.

NOT FUNNY
Jennifer Lawrence has long been praised for her authenticity in a Hollywood elite full of all-too-carefully curated personalities. But as one of the celebrities whose nude pictures were hacked, now isn't the time for laughter or self-deprecating humor. Lawrence is right in getting the authorities involved, writes Samantha Allen. Just because she's America's Sweetheart doesn't mean she doesn't deserve justice.
CONTROL YOUR MEN
The Afghan army is struggling both to provide security and prosecute illegal killings carried out by its own soldiers, officials say—and millions of dollars hang in the balance. If the Afghan government fails to act quickly enough to find and punish those responsible—or prove the charges groundless—it could lose millions, if not billions, of dollars in U.S. aid.
NO PLACE IS SAFE

American military forces carried out an operation against the Islamic militant group Al-Shabab in Somalia on Monday, according to the Pentagon. According to American and Somali officials, Shabab leader Ahmed Abdi Godane may have been killed in the airstrike, which occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. Monday night a small village near Barawe. "Several cars were destroyed and Godane may have been in one of them. We are awaiting results from our secret services," said a Somali official. A U.S. official in Nairobi said "we're 80 percent sure" Godane was killed in the strike.
