HELLO, NEIGHBOR

It turns out that running a grimy chicken joint in Rochester, New York, wasn't the only foul work Mufid Alfgeeh was engaged in. Michael Daly reports that before he was arrested on charges of trying to help ISIS, he tweeted fondly about the "the State" and becoming an "individual wolf."

No Beheadings

Hundreds of Australian police swooped down on homes in Sydney and Brisbane, prompted by intelligence reports that ISIS supporters were planning a public execution in the country, according to Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Authorities on Wednesday arrested several people in the coordinated raids, which amounted to the the biggest antiterrorism operation in Australia's history. Intelligence authorities indicated that the targeted individuals were planning public beheadings and that "direct exhortations" were coming from "an Australian who is apparently quite senior in ISIL to networks of support back in Australia to conduct demonstrations here," Abbott told reporters. Police allege that some suspects had been planning their attack for months.

CONTAGION

From Catalonia to Flanders, European independence movements are closely watching the vote in Scotland today. Barbie Latza Nadea reports that win or lose, the Scottish movement has already given several other breakaway regions a boost.

FORWARD MARCH

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted to approve President Obama's plan to combat ISIS by training and providing equipment for moderate Syrians. By a vote of 273 to 156, the House moved Obama's strategy against ISIS a step closer to implementation. A notable 40 percent of Democrats opposed the plan, with Republicans providing needed support. Many politicians are dubious about the plan, particularly Obama's vow not to put U.S. soldiers on the ground. Military officials have expressed doubts about this approach. On Tuesday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey specifically said U.S. troops may be needed. The Senate is expected to approve the bill on Thursday.

FORGOTTEN

More than 150 million men alive today were married as children. The saga of of child brides is well known, but Nina Strochlic reports there is not enough research on the fate of these young boys.
