Cheat Sheet - Can Obama Keep His Generals in Check?

Read This, Skip That ....

September 17, 2014
WHO'S THE BOSS?

President Obama and his generals are not on the same page. While he has promised no combat troops to fight ISIS, his top general says he may recommend them. Eli Lake and Josh Rogin report on whether the White House can close the rift between the president and military brass before Americans die in combat.

SEE YA

The Minnesota Vikings have caught on to public sentiment and have finally placed running back Adrian Peterson on the exempt/commissioner's permission list. This means he is suspended indefinitely from all team activities. The Vikings had previously reinstated Peterson after he sat out Sunday's game. "After giving the situation additional thought, we have decided this is the appropriate course of action for the organization and for Adrian," according to a statement from the team. Peterson is accused of reckless or negligent injury to a child, after he allegedly used a switch, or tree branch, to spank his son.

We Dare You

ISIS has released a short video in which the extremist group appears to say it will kill American ground forces if the White House deploys them to Iraq and/or Syria. The video apparently is the terrorist network's first response to President Obama's vow to "degrade and ultimately destroy" it. The 52-second video is billed as a preview for a longer video, The New York Times reports. It begins with American troops and tanks under fire and American soldiers carrying a wounded comrade toward an armored vehicle. The words "Flames of War" appear with another phrase, "Fighting has just begun," below that, and ends with "Coming Soon." Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey told U.S. senators Tuesday that U.S. troops could end up fighting ISIS in a ground war—contrary to what Obama has said.

IT'S ON

Pennsylvania state troopers risked their lives on Friday when they rushed to help two of their own, gunned down allegedly by a self-declared "survivalist." Now, reports Michael Daly, they're out in the woods frantically searching to get him.

GULLIBLE

While the rumors of Sen. John McCain having met with ISIS in 2013 have been proven false, Sen. Rand Paul seems to think otherwise. Olivia Nuzzi reports on how Paul's insistence that McCain's nonexistent photo-op with the militants is part of his reasoning for not arming Syrian rebels.
