FAILING UPWARDS

After Ferguson police allegedly beat a man in 2009, they charged him with destruction of property for bleeding on the their uniforms. Now, reports Michael Daly, one of those officers sits on the City Council.

RIGHTEOUS ANGER

Speaking before the press on Wednesday, President Obama addressed the gruesome execution of journalist James Foley by ISIS. "Today the entire world is appalled," he said. "Jim was a journalist, a son, a brother, and a friend." The White House announced on Wednesday that the president had called Foley's parents, and told them he was "heartbroken." The president also lashed out against ISIS, saying the organization murders Muslims by the thousands, targets Christians and other minorities, enslaves and rapes women, and terrorizes hundreds of thousands. "No just God would stand for what they did yesterday," he declared, and that it "has no ideology of value to human beings." He also predicted that the group will fail because it offers "nothing."

RIP

Americans are horrified and outraged at the beheading of James Foley at the hands of ISIS. Jamie Dettmer remembers his time with Foley reporting from the Middle East. For Foley, journalism was bearing witness: he believed in the importance of contributing to the first rough draft of history.

NOT BLACK AND WHITE

The shooting of Michael Brown has exposed national racial tensions, but Asian-Americans in Ferguson have been overlooked in the riots and protests. Tim Mak reports that more than 20 businesses owned by Asian-Americans have been damaged. One lawyer even says police don't protect the shops because "their rights may have been placed on a lower priority."

FUTURE IS BRIGHT

The teen birth rate is now less than one-third what it was at its height in 1957. Back then, 96.3 out of every 1,000 teenage girls gave birth, while today it is 26.6. The drop in teen birth rates means roughly 4 million fewer births to teenagers during the past 20 years. The largest recorded declines between 1991 and 2012 were for non-Hispanic black teenagers. According to officials, this saved taxpayers in 2010 alone $12 billion as teen mothers usually depend on food stamps, Medicaid, and other forms of welfare. Officials tied the decline to increased effective contraception like birth control, as well as less sex, potentially due to fears of HIV.
