Cheat Sheet - Couric Slams Sawyer in New Tell-All

Read This, Skip That ....

August 27, 2014
JUICY
America's most powerful female TV anchors are about to be exposed in a new tell-all book, Lloyd Grove reports. Katie Couric comes across as brash, striving, and self-absorbed, Diane Sawyer is a Machiavellian, often-inscrutable workaholic, and Christiane Amanpour has an off-putting moral superiority.
MERCY

The mother of 31-year-old journalist Steven Sotloff has issued a direct plea to the leader of ISIS for her son's release. "I am sending this message to you, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi al-Quraishi al-Hussaini, the caliph of the Islamic State. I am Shirley Sotloff. My son Steven is in your hands," she says in a video. "You, the caliph, can grant amnesty. I ask you please to release my child." Shirley Sotloff had previously asked news organizations to forgo coverage of her son's abduction because she was told by ISIS that any publicity would lead to her son being murdered. That blackout ended when ISIS named Sotloff as their next victim after it murdered his cellmate, James Foley, last week. According to reports, Sotloff may have been marked from ISIS early on.

COOL HEADS
Americans are reeling over ISIS's murder of U.S. journalist James Foley, but our anger shouldn't dictate our foreign policy. Jacob Siegel warns that the U.S. shouldn't play into ISIS propaganda by letting our outrage drive us into another war. We should do everything to secure the release of Americans captured by ISIS, but we can't let the terrorist group's manipulations determine our military actions.
ABOUT THAT

ESPN issued a statement Wednesday regarding its story on the shower habits of openly gay NFL player Michael Sam and how his teammates are handling it. "ESPN regrets the manner in which we presented our report. Clearly, yesterday we collectively failed to meet the standards we have set in reporting on LGBT-related topics in sports," the company said. The report included details like a defensive player saying "Sam is respecting our space" and that Sam was waiting to take a shower to not make teammates uncomfortable.

JUST THE START
Libya is devolving into chaos, and the Obama administration has no clue how to contain it. The U.S. was completely out of the loop when it came to secret air raids on Tripoli by Egypt and the United Arab Emirates this week, Jamie Dettmer writes. Scared of the violence, the West is shutting down its embassies and getting out.
