A woman admits she lied about her alleged rape at the hands of Bright Eyes lead singer Conor Oberst. The story is tempting for those who believe that women routinely lie about rape to cover up their own sexual indiscretions (or to get revenge against men). Amanda Marcotte writes this case gives a bad name to the thousands of women who report their assaults.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday he will hit Hamas with "great force" in response to the group's rejection of Egypt's proposed cease-fire. "It would have been preferable to have solved this diplomatically, and this is what we tried to do when we accepted the Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire," Netanyahu said in broadcast remarks. "But Hamas leaves us no choice but to expand and intensify the campaign against it." Although Israel accepted the cease-fire, Hamas responded by firing rockets, which killed a 38-year-old Israeli.

LOOK OUT

The U.S. Border Patrol detained a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and immigration activist at a Texas airport Tuesday. Jose Antonio Vargas has lived and worked in the U.S. for years without legal documentation (though he travels on a passport from the Philippines). The Border Patrol said he was in custody but offered no more details. "About to go thru secrutiy at McAllen airport," Vargas tweeted. "I don't know what's going to happen."
