PURSE STRINGS

The House of Representatives sent a strong message to the National Security Agency via the power of the purse strings Thursday night. By 293 to 123, the House voted in favor of an amendment that would cut funding for NSA "backdoor searches," the warrantless collection and search of Americans' emails, and browsing and chat history. "Backdoor searches" are allowed under Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act. Reps. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), and Thomas Massie (R-KY) sponsored an amendment to the Defense Appropriations Bill specifying U.S. government funds could not finance the practice. A companion amendment would still need to be approved by the Senate before it could become law. Still, the effort makes for a powerful NSA pushback after last month's largely weak attempt to reform the agency's policies.

UM, OK

Somebody still isn't over being called a jackass by the president. In an epic rant on the radio Thursday, rapper Kanye West claimed he was on a "mission from God" and attacked President Obama. Speaking about the president's move to send military advisers to Iraq, Kanye bizarrely asserted, "You can't effect change from inside the White House … You gotta have the money." "Good ideas usually aren't connected to money as much," he continued, "Creativity and extreme genius are extremely cheap." Later in the interview, West addressed people mocking him for comparing himself to Steve Jobs. "Don't worry about how I'm saying what I'm saying," he said. "Look at what I'm saying and how I feel and how my intent is." We'll get right on that.

PROGRESS

The U.S. Presbyterian Church voted at its General Assembly on Thursday to allow ministers to perform gay weddings in states where it is legal. It also voted to change its constitution from defining marriage as being between "a man and a woman" to between "two people." In 1991 and then in 2008, the church banned pastors from doing same-sex marriages. Both measures on Thursday passed with large majorities. The General Assembly had decided in 2010 to ordain openly gay ministers. The Presbyterian Church has large liberal and conservative branches. In 2010, after that decision, many of the conservative congregations left the church. There are roughly 10,038 churches and 1.8 million members associated with the U.S. Presbyterian Church.
