NARRATIVE
As Lupita Nyong'o's star rises, the charming Ivy League graduate with an America-approved cultural pedigree is being used as proof of the mythical post-racialism of Hollywood. Rawiya Kameir on the Oscar winner's "acceptable blackness."
MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY
The president says he wants Congress to give him $5 billion next year to fight terrorism, but the news came as a shock to lawmakers—and they are not about to give up the money easily. Lawmakers express their shock and surprise to Josh Rogin.
SQUARE ONE

The search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is seemingly back to square one. According to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, "the search in the vicinity of the acoustic detections can now be considered complete and, in its professional judgment, the area can now be discounted as the final resting place of MH370." The four acoustic pings that were driving the search for the still-missing plane likely did not actually come from it. Authorities now believe that the sounds probably emanated from some other man-made source. A seven-week search of 329 square miles of ocean floor was largely guided by the pings, which now means the search was effectively for naught.

JERKS

People who hate vaccines but love to travel internationally have pushed U.S. measles cases to the highest level in 20 years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday there are 288 cases so far this year, the largest number since 1994. "The current increase in measles cases is being driven by unvaccinated people, primarily U.S. residents, who got measles in other countries, brought the virus back to the United States and spread to others in communities where many people are not vaccinated," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunizations and Respiratory Diseases.

Judge Dread
The 99 percent conviction rate in Japan's criminal courts is no credit to the efficiency of the system or efforts to reform it. Jake Adelstein on why those stats have less to do with efficient law enforcement than with forced confessions, trumped up charges, professional judges who have no common sense, and gross prosecutorial misconduct.
