Cheat Sheet - Overdose Death of an American Jihadist

April 10, 2014
R.I.P.

Eric Harroun, a.k.a. "The American Jihadist," died of an overdose on Tuesday at his father's home in Arizona. Harroun, 31, presented himself as an ex-U.S. soldier who had turned freedom fighter and come to the Middle East to protest corrupt American foreign policy. Anna Therese Day reports on the fighter she knew.

SHAMEFUL

The Russian government denied multiple FBI requests for information on Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev two years prior to the attack, reports The New York Times. According to an inspector general's review, this information would have led to more careful scrutiny of Tsarnaev prior to the 2013 attack, which left three dead and more than 200 injured. Russian officials told the FBI in 2011 that Tsarnaev was "a follower of radical Islam" and he "had changed drastically since 2010 as he prepared to leave the United States for travel to the country's region to join unspecified underground groups." However, Russian officials denied subsequent requests for additional information on Tsarnaev. While Tsarnaev was killed eluding the police, the Justice Department is seeking the death penalty against Dzhokhar, his younger brother and suspected co-conspirator in the Boston Marathon bombings.

SAVING GRACE

All 21 people stabbed in a Pennsylvania school rampage Wednesday are expected to live—one even took a selfie. The 16-year-old behind the now-famous selfie, Nate Scimio, shielded several students from the attacker and managed to pull a fire alarm to alert everyone else. However, says Michael Daly, think how different the toll would have been with bullets.

POINTING FINGERS

Russia, the Regina George of world politics, accused NATO on Thursday of using the Ukraine crisis to boost its popularity among its members and justify its existence. The Russian foreign ministry's comments come after NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen warned Moscow there would be consequences if it intervened in Ukraine and did not pull troops back from the border. "The constant accusations against us by the secretary general convince us that the alliance is trying to use the crisis in Ukraine to rally its ranks in the face of an imaginary external threat to NATO members and to strengthen demand for the alliance… in the 21st century," the ministry said.

CUCKOO'S Nest

In 2012, according to a new study by the Treatment Advocacy Center, an estimated 365,000 mentally ill inmates were being held in state prisons, compared to just 35,000 in state-run psychiatric hospitals. In other words, reports Abby Haglage, the number of mentally ill people in prisons is 10 times that of mentally ill in hospitals.
