Cheat Sheet - MH370's Sinister Timeline Unravels

March 19, 2014
NEVERENDING STORY

As the official Malaysian account of what happened to Flight 370 unravels, it is becoming quite clear, writes Clive Irving, that the sinister interpretations of what happened in the cockpit are becoming less persuasive. The airline's CEO now says that it was unclear whether a life-support data system (ACARS) had been disabled. Well, no hijacker would bother turning it off. It's almost certain this was an accident.

DOUBLE DOWN

Facing little resistance from Ukrainian servicemen, Crimea's self-defense forces took Ukraine's navy headquarters in the port of Sevastopol on Wednesday. The men first took the square outside the building, and raised the Russian flag. Upon the arrival of the commander of the Russian Black Sea fleet, they took the headquarters themselves without resistance, as the Ukrainians packed and left. The takeover comes just a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a treaty to make Crimea part of Russia.

TROUBLING

While the tough conditions for adults dealing with mental-health issues are well known, the obstacles facing children are rarely talked about. Brandy Zadrozny reports on a new study showing that one in 10 hospitalized children suffer from mental-health problems and many never make it past the waiting room.

FIRST STEP

In her first public speech since General Motors recalled 1.6 million cars after dozens of accidents and 12 deaths were linked to the models, CEO Mary Barra apologized, and said it "took too long" for the automaker to respond. GM had been aware as far back as 2001 about faulty ignition switches. "I am very sorry for the loss of life that occurred, and we will take every step to make sure this never happens again,'' she said. However, Barra did not say the company would pay victims' families.

GOOD WORK

The 14 men allegedly behind a members-only child-porn website have been arrested. The website, which had more than 27,000 subscribers, featured around 250 children, most of them boys. "Never before in the history of this agency have we identified and located this many minor victims in the course of a single child-exploitation investigation," said Daniel Ragsdale of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The ages of the boys on the site ranged from 3 to 17, and came from 39 U.S. states, as well as Britain, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and Belgium. The boys were enticed to share explicit videos of themselves through social-media networks, often by men posing as women. The website was allegedly operated by Jonathan Johnson, 27, of Louisiana.
