Cheat Sheet - Clapper: We Can't Stop Another Snowden

February 24, 2014
LEAKAGE

One of the biggest national-security leaks in American history plagues James Clapper—and Eli Lake exclusively reports that the Director of National Intelligence believes it can happen again. A 51-year veteran of the intelligence community, Clapper admits "we will never ever be able to guarantee that there will not be an Edward Snowden or another Chelsea Manning because this is a large enterprise composed of human beings with all their idiosyncrasies."

ON THE LAM

Although he's fled his now-notorious palace outside of Kiev, former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has hardly made a clean escape. The acting interior minister, Arsen Avakov, issued a warrant for his arrest, accusing him of being responsible for the mass killing of protesters in last week's demonstrations. Avakov made the announcement via his official Facebook page. He also said Yanukovych was last known to be in Crimea. During last week's protests in Ukraine, 82 people were killed in violent clashes with the government.

CUTBACKS

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is seeking to reduce the U.S. Army to a size unprecedented in recent decades, according to a report from The New York Times. Under his budget proposal, the Army force will be its smallest since before the World War II buildup. The Army would drop from a post-9/11 peak of 570,000 active-duty soldiers to less than 450,000. Also as part of the plan, an entire class of Air Force jets will be retired. "You have to always keep your institution prepared, but you can't carry a large land-war Defense Department when there is no large land war," one Pentagon official said.

RETURN OF THE KING?

In the wake of Piers Morgan's not wholly unexpected demise at CNN, Larry King, the cable network's most famous former host, exclusively reveals to Lloyd Grove that he'd consider a return to his old post. King, 81, who currently hosts Larry King Now, a Web program for Ora TV, said "If they [CNN and Ora] could work it out, I would do it." Though former CNN President Jonathan Klein said Morgan "was phenomenal," the station will need to fill the 9 p.m. slot, and the Suspendered One may be just the man to do it.

CLEANING SHOP

In a sudden move, Egypt's military-backed interim government has resigned, state-run media source Al Ahram reports. The move paves the way for its army chief, Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, to officially declare his run for presidency. An Egyptian official has already confirmed to Reuters that "This was done as a step that was needed ahead of Sisi's announcement that he will run for president." In order to run, Sisi needed to relinquish his position as defense minister. It apparently took only 15 minutes for the cabinet to conclude the government should resign.
