Today: Obamacare Has Glitchy First Day , Malaysia: Obama Canceled Trip , Treasury Sets Deadline for Debt Limit
Cheat Sheet: Morning

LOSERS

On October 1, 2013, Democrats opened up a program to bring health care to all, while Republicans peacocked around trying to stop history. It's obvious which side will be judged more kindly years from now, says The Daily Beast's Michael Tomasky. Plus, Daniel Gross on the shutdown's killing of the tourism industry, Jamelle Bouie on obstructionist Democrats, and Marlow Stern on The West Wing's shutdown prediction.

DAY 1

You might not have noticed it due to all the shutdown news, but the Affordable Care Act went live on Tuesday, glitches and all. Around 2.8 million people visited Healthcare.gov, the sign-up site, swamping the site with so much traffic that it caused spotty service. An additional 81,000 dialed into the help center. The problems on the website were blamed on staff shortages, since most government employees involved in the law's implementation were furloughed due to the shutdown. It was a rough day for the GOP too: after months of protesting the Affordable Care Act, many of its staunchest critics were too busy dealing with the shutdown to focus on the website glitches.

SORRY KUALA LUMPUR

Malaysia hasn't had a sitting U.S. president visit since 1966—and now the country will have to wait even longer. President Obama has canceled a trip to Malaysia scheduled for next week due to the government shutdown, Malaysia's leader said Wednesday. Obama had been scheduled to leave for a four-nation tour that also included Brunei, Indonesia, and the Philippines. What's more, this is not even the first time Obama has canceled a trip to Asia due to Obamacare—he canceled a trip in 2010 to garner votes for the law. Meanwhile, back in Washington, the capital remained at a halt and veterans planned another protest at the World War II memorial on Wednesday—and possibly other sites, such as the Lincoln Memorial.

next up: oct. 17

Since the government is so good at deadlines, the Treasury just set another one: Oct. 17. That's the date the nation's debt limit is set to exceed $16.7 trillion, according to Secretary Jacob Lew. On Tuesday, Lew sent a warning to Congress that in little more than two weeks, the Treasury will run out of borrowed money, which, by law, cannot be exceeded. He requested an increase of the limit, and noted the department has already taken the final measures to extend borrowing.

Hell on Wheels

More than a dozen bikers have been arrested after a day of chaos in New York. The Daily Beast's Michael Daly reports on a young family who came under attack.
