D.C. Shootout

Prior to Thursday's bloody end in Washington, the 34-year-old new mom's manic state required hospitalization and was drawing police to her Connecticut home. The Daily Beast's Michael Daly reports.

week of madness

The man who lit himself on fire yesterday on the National Mall has died at the hospital from his injuries—which are so severe that DNA and dental records will have to be used to identify the body. Witnesses say around 4 p.m. Friday afternoon, the man doused himself in gasoline and set himself ablaze. Nearby joggers took off their shirts to extinguish the flames. Police say he was breathing and conscious when firefighters arrived and airlifted him to a hospital. His death comes just two days after a woman was shot and killed by police after ramming into gates near the White House. Did someone taint the water in D.C.?

Seeking Stability

With Iraq, Syria and Egypt on the perpetual brink, the kingdom of Jordan is the safest place in a dangerous neighborhood—but for how long? By The Daily Beast's Christopher Dickey.

CASH MONEY

At least they can agree on something. The House unanimously passed a bill ordering back pay for around 800,000 furloughed government employees, five days after failed budget negotiations took them off their jobs. The Senate could pick up the bill later today and President Obama is expected to sign it. Payment puts displaced workers no closer to actually going back to their posts, though. And if the continued public squabbling is any clue, it might be some time before an agreement is reached. "It's encouraging to see both parties come together to provide fairness for the 800,000 federal workers hurt by this shutdown," Speaker Boehner said. "Now we should do something about the 800,000 jobs being destroyed by the president's health care law."

i think we skipped fall

Wyoming and South Dakota have seen winter come early. Winter Storm Atlas knocked out power to over 9,000 homes in the two states, caused millions of dollars worth of damage, and dumped over three feet of snow in South Dakota. The combination storm system also brought a series of tornadoes to Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota, causing the destruction of buildings, but thankfully no loss of life. The snow is expected to end later on Saturday, but a blizzard rages on in Badlands National Park, where an already fallen 19 inches has set a new record, according to officials. The National Weather Service warns of severe thunderstorms as Atlas moves east, affecting areas from Wisconsin to Arkansas. Global warming, what?
