SKIP THAT

A new group bent on unmasking 'leftists in the media' has its first target—MSNBC's 'racial extortionist,' the Rev. Al Sharpton. The Daily Beast's David Freedlander talks with the leader of the right's answer to Media Matters.

REALITY CHECK

Wonder why the government is still shuttered? You may have missed this interview, in which the speaker issued talking points from another dimension. The Daily Beast's Jamelle Bouie has the blow-by-blow.

YIKES

Seriously, did nobody teach Congress that you always tell creditors that you're in good shape financially? Because China, the U.S.'s largest creditor, is not looking so reassured. A Chinese official warned the U.S. on Monday that the "clock is ticking" to avoid a U.S. credit default—which would hurt not only the U.S., but the global economy (and especially China). Vice Finance Minister Zhu Guangyao didn't mince words: he said he hopes the U.S. "fully understands the lessons of history," ominously reminding everyone of the 2011 credit downgrade. Calling the U.S. and China "inseparable," Zhou asked that the U.S. "earnestly take steps to resolve" the issue. The U.S. has to vote to increase the debt ceiling by October 17 or face default.

BIG MONEY

And the winner of the financial crisis is ... Warren Buffett! Five years ago, when everyone was scrambling to save, the American billionaire decided to invest in a few major companies and is now seeing a profit of $10 billion and counting. And according to Buffett, anyone could have done what he did, though he may have been the only one. "In terms of simple profitability, an average investor could have done just as well investing in the stock market if they bought during the panic period," Buffet said this weekend. "You make your best buys when people are overwhelmingly fearful." Lesson learned.

DEFIANT

Malala Yousafzai will not let anyone silence her. The Pakistani schoolgirl, 16, who was shot in the head by the Taliban almost exactly one year ago, spoke to the BBC for her first in-depth interview since the attack, calling for increased dialogue with the Taliban—and talking about her future. "The best way to solve problems and to fight against war is through dialogue," Yousafzai said. "That's not an issue for me, that's the job of the government ... And that's also America's job." Yousafzai said she hopes to be a politician, and she wants to "change the future of my country." Yousafzai now lives in England, after the Taliban targeted her.
